Scalable cold isostatic presses from Quintus

Cold Isostatic Pressing (CIP) has been used successfully by manufacturers around the world. CIP is used to consolidate metal- and ceramic powders to make a “green” part that can be further treated, i.e. rolling, machining or sintering.

Large scale production made easy

Large pressure vessels are made possible using industrial solutions provided by Quintus for CIP machinery, increasing throughput and ensuring densification. ​

More efficient production

Quintus CIP equipment can be delivered in either vertical or horizontal loading configurations, from small scale equipment to extremely large production machinery. This scalability allows mass production at minimal cost.

Process media

Typical pressures from 1,035 to 4,138 bar (15,000 to 60,000 psi) at ambient temperature CIP can achieve 95% of theoretical density for ceramics and metal powders.

A proven process for high-performance parts

Common applications for Cold Isostatic Pressing include consolidation of ceramic powders, compressing of graphite, refractories and electrical insulators, and other fine ceramics for dental and medical applications.

Cold Isostatic Pressing (CIP) is a wet bag compaction method, subjecting compacted powders, enclosed by a flexible rubber mold, to extreme isostatic pressure to create optimum sintering/densification conditions. The most commonly used pressure media for CIP is water at ambient temperature.

CIP is commonly used to ensure a homogenous powder green bodies for optimum sintering processes for metal alloys, refractory metals, brittle magnetic and ceramics, etc.

CIP ensures homogeneous compaction of powder-based components and is especially beneficial for components having a high diameter to length ratio such as tube or rods shaped geometries for which uniaxial pressing will create a density gradient along the length of the part.

Most commonly the warm isostatic processing step is located after pouching and sealing of the cell, enabling the press to be located outside of dry room conditions.

Although the battery industry is focused on pressing complete multilayer cells, it is also possible to press electrodes and solid electrolytes by themselves before stacking.

Given the horizontal press design enabling one-directional material flow, the available range of large vessel volumes and existing automation solutions of our integration partners, the throughput of a high-volume production line will not be bottlenecked by the Warm Isostatic Pressing (WIP) process if sized correctly.

From the two vessel technologies, mono-block and wire-wound, the wire-wound technology systems can be scaled up to a cylinder volume of 2000 L.
