Analysis of parameters setting and stocking vs lead time requirements in low-volume production

Quintus Technologies is the global leader in high pressure technology. The company designs, manufactures and installs high pressure systems in three main areas: densification of advanced materials, sheet metal forming and high-pressure processing for food and beverage. Quintus has delivered over 1,900 systems to customers within industries from energy, medical implants, space, aerospace, automotive and food processing. The company is headquartered in Västerås, Sweden, with a presence in 45 countries worldwide.

Background

The products consist of mostly purchased parts that are assembled in Quintus workshop. Some of the critical parts have longer lead time from the suppliers than the final product has to the customer. It is a project based low volume production with a big variety in size and weight of the parts, from small screws to large forgings weighing several tons.

The aftermarket offers The Quintus Care Program, which means that Quintus is directly involved in maintaining service, delivery and exchange of spare parts and technical support.

Task description

The aim for the thesis is to investigate how parameters should be set for the inventory in a low volume production, to fulfil high material availability and short lead times as well as keeping the storage cost as low as possible. The warehouse provides both the production and the aftermarket with parts. Parts are purchased to stock based on a sales forecast, from re-order points or on demand to a specific project. Analysis of which parts that are to be purchased accordingly should be included, as well as developing KPIs for follow-up of the processes.

Areas to consider are ABC analysis, sales and operation planning, inventory analyses and parameter setting both regarding systems and spare parts.

The thesis will include identification and mapping of current state, benchmarking of other companies, identification of opportunities and implementation at Quintus.

Suitable background
