Calculation Models for High Flows

Introduction

Quintus Technologies is the global leader in high pressure technology. The company designs, manufactures, installs, and supports high pressure systems in three main areas: densification of advanced materials, sheet metal forming and high pressure processing for food and beverage innovation, safety, and shelf life. Quintus has delivered over 1,900 systems to customers within industries from energy, medical implants, space, aerospace, automotive and food processing. The company is headquartered in Västerås, Sweden, with a presence in 45 countries worldwide.

Background

This project is manged from the high pressure processing (HPP) division. HPP is mainly used for extended the shelf life of food and beverages without using heat or additives. The high pressure will inactive the bacteria without changing the flavour. A typical cycle will use a pressure of 600 MPa.

Quintus system runs in cycles with stages following a set order. One stage is the decompression of the system. This process will create every high flow and great pressure difference. The high flow creates stress and wear on mechanical components. Understanding the flow and physical phenomena are keys to design reliable and cost-effective equipment. Optimizing this component can also reduce the decompression time and overall cycle time.

Task description

The object is to calculate and test a mechanical component that can be used in Quintus systems for decompression. The main tasks will be:

  • Create a calculation model for the flow
  • Identify key factors during this phase
  • Turn the model into design parameters
  • Design and create a prototype
  • Test the equipment and validate your concept

Suitable background

Master of Science in engineering with specialization in fluid dynamics, applied physics or similar. Knowledge of CFD is required.

Application Information

The thesis will take place at Quintus office in Västerås and is expected to start in January 2023.We will have two master theses linked to the project.
